Hive material affects internal moisture management and overwintering conditions. Wooden hives can handle solid bottoms because of the material’s breathability and ability to buffer moisture. Polystyrene hives, however, are non-breathable and tend to cause condensation; with solid bottoms, moisture builds up, leading to unsuitable winter conditions. Therefore, polystyrene hives need well-ventilated bottoms to maintain proper moisture control.
