Equipment hygiene can be categorised into hive components that come into direct contact with the colony and storage areas for boxes and frames that are no longer in use. Generally, brood frames should not be used for more than one winter and should be replaced during the season with new frames fitted with foundation. Transport areas for honey frames must also remain hygienic, with clean surfaces and sealed boxes to prevent contamination from foreign particles.
