Inventory of priority practices and innovations
Good Beekeeping Practices and Biosecurity Measures have been divided into Themes that will be discussed in the 4 years of the project
In 2023 have been discussed the following Themes: “Apiary set-up and management/maintenance” and “Varroosis”
In 2024 will be discussed the following Themes: “Colony set-up and daily management/maintenance” and “American foulbrood”
In 2025 will be discussed the following Themes: “Record-keeping”, “Bee feeding and watering” and “European foulbrood”
In 2026 will be discussed the following Themes: “Routine (preventive) hygiene practices” and “Nosemosis + Small Hive Beetle + Vespa velutina“.
Practices have been collected and ranked from all 13 B-THENET Centres with the EU-Survey system.
2’094 beekeepers answered to the survey. Below the themes that received the highest scores:
Good Beekeeping Practices
Properly place hives in the apiary
Avoid drifting and robbing
Proper comb storage
Proper hive transportation
Safe working procedures in a healthy working place
Create a quarantine apiary
Biosecurity Measures
Guarantee best efficacy of anti-varroa treatments, especially with organic compounds
Produce nuclei and swarms with no clinical signs of varroa
Recognition of the disease
Select and breed colonies that are varroa-tolerant/resistant.

Description and Categorisation of priority practices
Best Practices have been described by Beneficiaries and Collaborating partners at level of B-THENET centres in local languages and published in the Exchange Platform (open access) according to their Categories: Good Beekeeping Practices and Biosecurity Measures
June – December 2023
Exchange and validation of practices
Best Practices are discussed in local language and voted by platforms’ users. Filter practices related to your Country in the categories: Good Beekeeping Practices and Biosecurity Measures

Each year, we target different beekeeping themes. For 2024, Colony set-up and daily management/maintenance as well as American foulbrood will be in the focus of the project. Access the surveys to rate the most relevant practices and innovations within these categories, according to your opinion as a beekeeper!
